Returning History to Its Roots: The Story of the Beatty Bros. Plate

August 20, 2024

At New to You, we recently had the privilege of facilitating a meaningful homecoming for a remarkable piece of local heritage through our auction, all in support of Groves Hospital. The story begins with a collector’s plate—a commemorative Royal Doulton Beatty Brothers plate from 1934—donated to us by GHVA volunteer Marlene Tosh. Marlene received the plate from her sister, who had inherited it from her father-in-law, Wesley Ham, the former General Manager at Beatty Brothers.

This particular plate is a rare blue edition, originally given to family members of the Beatty Brothers, the historic company founded in 1874 by George Beatty. The significance of the plate runs deep, and it found its way back to its rightful place when George Beatty, the great-grandson of the company’s founder, placed the winning bid during our auction.

For George, participating in the auction was more than just acquiring a rare collectible; it was a deeply personal experience. George shared with us his connection to the Beatty family, recalling fond memories of his ancestors and the significance of the plate within their family history. The plate, part of a set commemorating the 60th anniversary of Beatty Brothers, now completes his collection and holds a special place in his heart—and his china cabinet.

In a touching gesture to honor his heritage, George took the plate to Belsyde Cemetery for lunch with his great-grandfather's grave, reflecting on his family’s history and feeling a profound connection to his roots.

Beyond the personal significance, George expressed his admiration for Dr. Abraham Groves and his legacy, sharing memories of his own encounters with the Groves family and the hospital that bears their name. Having served in various leadership roles in the healthcare sector, George understands the importance of supporting local medical care, making this auction win all the more meaningful.

We are thrilled that the auction supported Groves Hospital and returned an heirloom to its family. Stories like these remind us of the power of community, connection, and the enduring legacy of our local history. Thank you to everyone who participated in the auction and to all who continue to support our efforts at New to You and Groves Hospital Volunteer Association.
